1. How long has this discussion group been around?

Since February, 2007.

2. How do I join the group?

On the left side of the main page, under "Menu," you'll see an option that says "Register." Just click on that, and follow the instructions. Once you're finished you will receive a confirmation email that you also need to click in order to activate your membership. After that, you'll be good to go.

3. Are there any requirements to join the group?

None, except that to actually take part in the discussions - meaning posting notes or replies - you have to register as a member. The only exception is the Guest Forum, which is open for posting by members and non-members alike. You can read through any of the discussions on the other forums without joining. But to join a discussion outside the Guest Forum, you'll need to register.

4. How do I post notes or replies?

If you're new to the board and aren't sure how to proceed, click on the "Help" option from the menu on the left side of the main page. Or just click here - Help File

5. I'm not an expert on Shiloh. Can I still join this group and take part in the discussions?

Absolutely not. (Just kidding.)

Seriously, this group is intended for anyone who has any level of interest in Shiloh the battle, Shiloh the park, or both. We run the gamut, from members who are still new to learning about the battle, to current and former park rangers, professional historians, and everything inbetween. Wherever you are along that scale, if you have an interest in Shiloh, you're in the right place.

6. Do you have a chat room?

Yes. But, you must be a registered member to use, or even be able to see, the chat room.

7. Will you ever have scheduled chat sessions?

We'll be doing this from time to time. Any upcoming chat sessions will be posted as an announcement on the board, and also on the Events Calendar. But if you are a registered member, you can enter the chat room at any time and hold a chat session with someone.

8. You say the board has been around since February 2007, but the members list doesn't show any members before 2008. What gives?

The group started out on a different discussion board. We moved to the current board in March of 2008, and brought all of the posts and members from the old board over here. The database from the old board was transferred to this one on March 11th. Unfortunately we were not able to transfer original membership dates, or even original dates from the old board posts. The old posts were all jumbled together, which was (and still is) a bit of a pain to sort through. But it was the only way we could make the transfer work.

9. Is the original board still around?

For now it is, yes. You can no longer post there, but you can take a peek at it  by clicking here - Old Shiloh Board

10. Why do I see the little cannons firing away on some forums, but not others?

When you see a firing cannon, it means there are new posts in that forum since the last time you logged onto the board. If the cannon is not firing, there are no new posts in that particular forum since your last visit. That's how you can tell, at a glance, where the new posts are since the last time you were on the board. (Note though, that if you visit without signing onto the board, you may see all of the cannons firing, or only some of them.)

11. Do you have books or other sources that you recommend, to help me learn more about the battle or the park?

The Resource forum will eventually fill that purpose. For now, there are a few notes posted in that forum where members discuss some of the various books on the battle.

12. Do you ever have a get-together at Shiloh?

We haven't yet, but we might do that at some point. If so however, it would probably be a fairly informal gathering, and take place on some date other than the anniversary. The park holds events at that time, and several of us have met while attending those.

13. Why don't you have a FAQ page on the battle?

That's what the discussion board is for. :) But, we may put a general one together at some point.

14. I have some questions that I don't see covered here. Where can I turn to for help?

You can post a note in the Guest Forum, or if you prefer you can send an email to admin@shilohdiscussiongroup.com The board members are a pretty friendly and knowledgeable bunch, so don't hesitate to ask questions of them.

Ah, the infamous mana. :)

Probably the best response is to point you to this discussion, below, when the subject first came up a while back...

http://www.shilohdiscussiongroup.com/view_topic.php?id=168&forum_id=7

Short answer is that they're something of a rating system, and they were included as an option when we moved to this board from the old one last year. But to be honest, I don't really pay any attention to the mana things, and I've considered just doing away with them. We didn't use them when we first moved to this board, but as I think I mentioned in that discussion above, I activated them in hopes of curing another little problem we were having at the time. That's the reference you'll see to the mysterious little red x's. Long story about that. And the mana didn't help.

Anyway, I'll probably leave them alone for now, but unless there's some sort of outcry to keep them around, their days are probably numbered. (I hope no one takes away any of my mana for saying that. It's already pretty low. I'm obviously a bad member!)
