Hi folks,

By now you should have received (or shortly will receive) an email from me about a "book event" involving our discussion group and a Civil War blog belonging to one of our fellow members, Brett Schulte.

In case you did not receive this email for some reason, I'll repeat the details for everyone here. If you received the email then much of this will be redundant, but bear with us. :) Here you go....

Brett runs an excellent Civil War blog called The Order of Civil War Obsessively Compulsed. Recently he and several other bloggers (including our own Drew W. over at  another outstanding blog at http://cwba.blogspot.com) compiled a list of the top 10 books on Gettysburg, the final result of which is posted on Brett's web site. Here's a link...

http://www.brettschulte.net/CWBlog/best-civil-war-books/top-10-gettysburg-books-civil-war-bloggers/

Brett recently contacted me about having our group put together a similar list for Shiloh. I thought it was a heck of a good idea, so here we are.

Basically, it's going to work like this: We're inviting every member of the group to post their top 7 books on the battle of Shiloh, along with a brief description of why you like each one. (You can check out the Gettysburg list for an idea of how others handled this if you'd like.)

Now, you don't have to list 7 titles. Post as many as you can come up with, up to seven, even if it's only one or two.

Also, you don't have to go only with traditional battle accounts. If you have a book you love that relates to Shiloh in some way, perhaps from an angle that isn't often considered, and you think it deserves to be read - include it in your list.

Beginning in early August, Brett will start posting the lists from our group to his blog, and eventually all of the lists will be used to come up with an overall Top 7 books on Shiloh.

If you post a list here, your note could also be posted on Brett's blog site. (I think Brett will probably post a follow-up note here to explain how that will work.) If you would rather that your note not be posted there for some reason, you will need to mention that in your post, or contact either Brett or myself and let one of us know. Although to be honest, there's nothing to be afraid of. ;)

I'll be creating a new topic under the Resources forum titled "Shiloh Top 7 Book List." You will be able to post your list in that thread.

If you have any questions at all about this, don't hesitate to ask them. Just post them here under this note, and either Brett or I will respond.  Remember though, this is meant to be a fun project that will help other folks, including quite a few who may not have had a chance to read up that much on Shiloh yet, in choosing which books to start their learning journey with, or which ones they definitely want to add to their "must have" list. And you might be the one who includes a book that the rest of us don't know about, but would really enjoy. So be sure to tell us about it!

Here's the link where you can add your own list...

All,

This is just a follow-up to discuss how the blogging portion of this event will work.  As Perry said, anyone in the group who wants to participate can post their own Top 7 Shiloh books at the link Perry provided above.  Let's have a cutoff of August 1 as far as which lists I'll use to both publish and create a combined list.  Beginning shortly after or on August 1, I'll be posting the Top 7 lists at my blog TOCWOC one at a time, probably on one or two set days of the week.  I'll keep posting them until everyone's list has made an appearance.  Each person will be clearly listed as the author of the list.  In other words, I'm not going to steal your work!  :-)  Once all lists are posted, I will compile the final results into a combined list much like the one you can see at the link to my blog Perry provided above.

With that said, if you do not want to have your Top 7 list posted at TOCWOC for any reason, please send me or Perry a PM or use the Contact Us form in the top menu at TOCWOC to let me know.

Even if your list is not posted at TOCWOC it will still be used to calculate the final rankings.  If any of you has a web site you run or one you like, feel free to inlcude that at the bottom of your list and I'll include it when the blog posts go out.

My goals are for everyone here to benefit in some way:

1) Our collective Top 7 Shiloh books will provide newcomers to the battle a much more informed opinion than if only one of us posted a list.  It'll be a nice list for those new to the SDG to look at.

2) I want to get the SDG as much exposure as possible becaue I think it's a great site.  I typically "Tweet" these events on Twitter, post to Facebook, and post to StumbleUpon.  The end result will be more visitors, and hopefully more members, by the time this event is finished.

3) Each of you can link to a Civil War related web site you like at the bottom of your lsits, and these sites will likewise get some exposure from this event.

4) This will probably come as a shock to you :D, but I also want exposure for my blog.  At the end of the event , I'll post the combined Top 7 list of Shiloh books at my site (and at the SDG) which people searching for Shiloh books will find through the search engines.  A prominent link back here will be on that page as well.

5) I am sure most of us will be exposed to books on Shiloh we do not yet have or have never even heard of.

6) If after participating in this event any of you would like to try your hand at blogging, feel free to join us at TOCWOC, since we are a group blog of "informed amateurs".  Just contact me via PM or the TOCWOC Contact Us form for the details.

Remember folks, be sure to post your list of your favorite books on Shiloh up to seven, in the Resources forum. If you don't, it's not like you'll get kicked off the board. :) But we'd love to see everyone's lists. Not that it matters, but I'll probably post mine this coming weekend.

Thanks to everyone who's posted theirs so far. :)

Perry

Brett has posted an announcement about the book reviews over on his blog. You can read it here...

Still some time to post those reviews, but you better hurry!

All,

The permanent page hosting links to each person's individual list as well as a combined list has been created and is available at the following link:

http://www.brettschulte.net/CWBlog/best-civil-war-books/top-7-shiloh-books-shiloh-discussion-group/

Thanks again to everyone for what was a fun and rewarding event.  The links to each list will go live as each list is posted at TOCWOC on the first few Tuesdays and Thursdays of August.
