That's okay C.D., everyone is still welcome to post their lists even if the 'official' deadline for the the Top 7 list is passed. Some good choices on your list.
Thanks once again to everyone who took part, and to Brett for both suggesting this idea, and for sharing our choices on his blog.

I want to echo Perry's thoughts that even though the deadline for inclusion in the total results has passed, I definitely would like to see even more lists posted. I also want to thank everyone who has participated. I know I've learned a lot and I even purchased a few new books as a result.

I believe the volume of the official records concerning the Battle of Shiloh is important for interested readers to have this volume for further research. You do not have to buy the entire 128 volumes as the Shiloh volume is available seperate. It is available through Morningside Books in Dayton Ohio. Use this address
http://WWW.moringsidebooks.com
Use the link to the left on the first page and the link to the available individual copies is at the bottom of the page that offers the entire set of books. (first page after you use the link on page one)
You can buy this volume for $25.00. The Shiloh Book is part of series I, and is volume 10, part one, serial #10. Most of the volumes are in new condition being from a more recent publishing, still cello wrapped.
There are four series in the complete set of 128 volumes, the main section is series I. Volume numbers are hard to explain but remember you want volume 10 which comes in two parts, you want part one. The last identifier number, serial number is the easiest to explain, all books are numbered in order, 1 through 130 and you want serial #10. Follow these aids you can will get the right book. You really don't need Part two as it does not actually cover the battle but reports and letters of operations before the battle.
OFFICIAL RECORDS QUIZ #1 Why does the serial numbers go to 130 when there are only 128 volumes in the set?

Probably because I went hunting for the missing series once, figuring they were hiding info about the 16th WI from me.

| An off the wall question but have any of you ever read the book Traveller? it's a historical novel of the civil war in virginia as seen thru the eyes of Gen. Lee's horse. no names are used so you have to figure out who each person is through the descriptions given. I obtained the book years ago,it was a gift from my wife so had to be read. but I really enjoyed the book and it was almost like playing trivia trying to figure who each person was. I highly recommend this as a light and enjoyable read.

Yes I read that book a couple years ago and it is a very good book and figuring out each character is a journey in its own.So i recommend this book.plus its a book with a horse as the main character.

All,
The Combined Top 7 Shiloh Books List is up at TOCWOC. There are not a lot of surprises at the top, but I thought you would enjoy seeing the entire list of books mentioned in this event.

Thanks Brett. I was actually a bit surprised that Sword's book finished ahead of Daniel's, and darn near beat out Cunningham's for the top spot. A good showing for my favorite Shiloh book, even though I may have kept it from the #1 ranking by putting it third on my own list. If that makes any sense.
Thanks again for the help with this.

Perry,
I was surprised by Sword's showing too. I prefer Daniel's to Sword's, but I can't really fault anyone for going the other way. You're welcome. Thanks to everyone who participated. I learned a lot and had some fun along the way. If you guys ever have any other ideas for contests/events, I'm always willing to join in.

While I haven't yet compiled my own "Top Seven" list of Shiloh books, I really agree with the comment about Shelby Foote's "Shiloh, A Novel." I just picked this up on my last visit to Shiloh (about a week ago) and read it the next day. This book follows 6 different people and tells the story of Shiloh from their viewpoints.
The map at the front of the book helps pinpoint the locations of the various people and the routes they took during the battle. I kept one of the NPS Shiloh maps handy, too, to match with Foote's.
It is an easy read but very informative and engaging. This book and Foote's information in the Afterword will entice you to get additional books to learn more about the prime subjects at Shiloh.

Bill, welcome to the group. You've got some great shots of the park on Flickr.
Very good point about Shelby Foote's novel. It can sure help prime pump so to speak, and leave you wanting to learn more about Shiloh. He makes what can be an impersonal subject feel very personal indeed.
Thanks for the post!
