I just wanted to briefly introduce myself. My name is Richard Rutledge. I have been a Civil War buff for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Arkansas, my dad had CW books around all the time and so you could say.. it is in my genes..lol.
Anyway. Shiloh has always been my favorite battle. However, like most people I spent too many years (most of the years up till the last 5 or so) focused on the Eastern Theater and have just recently become devoted to the Western Theater. And since then, I find myself enjoying the Western Theater much more than I ever did the East.
I spent 17 years in the US Navy (so I also have a soft spot for the Naval aspect as well). I have been to many battlefield but not anywhere near as many as I should or want to. I have been to Prairie Grove, Pea Ridge, Shiloh, and Richmond. I would visit more but for the moolah aspect..lol.
I found this site from Nick Kurtz and the Rocky Mountain Civil War Roundtable. I found it from his blog (Battlefield Wanderings).
Anyway.. just wanted to say Hi and introduce myself to you fine people. I look forward to learning from you all.

Welcome Richard. How does an Arkansas Rebel get to Colorado? You need to go to Vicksburg & see the USS Cairo exhibit. There are parts of the Cairo there as well as artifacts. It was a City class ironclad. Last edited on Wed Nov 11th, 2009 07:02 pm by idaho native

A malfunctioning GPS gets an Arkansas Rebel out to Colorado....lol. Seriously though. family has brought me out to Colorado. While orginially from Arkansas, about the time I went into the Navy, my Dad's company moved them out here to Colorado... so when I finally got out of the Navy, they asked me to move to CO to help take care of my mom before she passed away last month... so here I am..lol
I want to go see the Cairo... while I was stationed in VA i was a volunteer docent at the Mariners Museum and was involved with the Monitor center part of it. Giving tours about the USS Monitor relics and the Battle of Hampton Roads.

Arkasas Rebel......
Welcome to our little group. There are a few of us Eastern Theater types in the group as well. We learn from one another......and there's lots to learn.
By the way, on this Veterans Day, thank you for your service and for all those who served our country!

Richard, welcome to the group. I have to get out to see those Monitor artifacts someday. That must have been a great experience working there.
I guess a lot of us with an interest in the West have gone through an Eastern Theater phase or maybe a Gettysburg phase at some point. I had mine back in the 80's, with Gettysburg.
I came to my interest in the war through the Western Theater (Chattanooga & Chickamauga) when I was pretty young, and I've always favored the West, but it's funny, I don't think I ever really felt that the West was somehow more important than the East, or vice-versa. I just always thought that the Western Theater got the short end of the stick where attention and credit were concerned.
I do believe the West was where the Union really won the war, but I think both theaters were important, just in different ways. The North couldn't have won without their success in the West, and the South could not have held on as long as they did without their success in the East for the first three years. So both theaters played an important role. I think all the hollering that goes on about one or the other being more important tends to miss that larger point.
In any case, welcome to our group, and I'll look forward to talking with you about Shiloh. And tell Nick thanks for the link. He has an excellent blog.
